Solid Waste Collection

Dear Valued Customer,

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves. WASTE MANAGEMENT is contracted with Houston County to provide the best curbside waste disposal service available to the residents of the unincorporated areas. If you have any questions concerning the following, please do not hesitate to call our office at (478) 987-1411 Monday thru Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE and CART PLACEMENT:

You have been provided with a 95-gallon cart (trash can). Your cart is emptied once per week per the pickup schedule.  Placement of the cart at the curb is very important. Please place your cart at least 5' (feet) away from any obstacles (mailbox, recycle bin or additional cart) with the handle facing TOWARD the curb and no more than 2' (feet) away from the curb no later than 7 AM on your pickup day. Household garbage includes any waste generated daily. This does not include tires, hazardous waste, batteries, and liquid paint.  Please bag any loose items to keep them from blowing while the cart is emptied. Also, please do not put hot ashes in the cart. The cart remains the property of the Houston County Commissioners and must not be painted, abused, or mutilated. RECYCLABLES:

You have been provided with an 18-gallon bin for recyclables. Recyclables are picked up EVERY OTHER WEEK per your scheduled pickup day. The following items are accepted:

  • Newspaper, including all inserts
  • Aluminum
  • Tin cans (you don't have to remove labels) and
  • Plastic Pete#1 soft drink bottles, HDPE#2 milk jugs and opaque water jugs

NO GLASS or CARDBOARD is accepted.

If all your recyclables will not fit in your bin, please feel free to place extra in bags and place the bags next to bin. Recyclables should be placed at the curb by 7 AM on your pickup day and placed at least 5' (feet) from your 95-gallon cart.

BULK WASTE:

This includes furniture, mattresses, large items which cannot physically fit in your 95-gallon cart.  Bulk waste does not include:

  • Construction debris (including carpet)
  • Dead animals
  • Hazardous waste
  • Car parts

Bulk items are picked up weekly per your pickup schedule. Please place all items at the curb no later than 7 AM and place at least 5' (feet) away from your 95-gallon cart. Bulk waste is provided for residential homes only.

APPLIANCES:

Includes stoves, refrigerators, dishwasher, water tanks, washers, dryers, etc. Please call our office at (478) 987-1411, or use our web portal at https://advdisp.qscend.com/311, to schedule a pickup.

ADDITIONAL CARTS:

An additional cart may be requested for an additional charge of $7 per month. Please call the Houston County Public Works Department at (478) 987-4299 to order or for any questions concerning your bill. 

YARD WASTE:

This includes leaves, pine straw, grass clippings, shrubbery clippings, tree trimmings, Christmas trees, and other vegetative matter generated from the maintenance of your yard. Yard waste does not include:

  • Plastic planting tubs
  • Lumber or landscaping timbers
  • Fencing or posts
  • Any land clearing

Tree limbs and branches must be no more than 5' (feet) in length, 8" (inches) in diameter and weigh no more than 50 lbs. Leaves, grass clippings, pine straw, pinecones, small twigs, sticks, shrubbery clippings and other small items should be bagged, and the bag cannot weigh more than 50 lbs. Please use bags strong enough so they will not break when picked up. One pile no greater than       5' (feet) long by 5' (feet) wide by 10' (feet) deep will be collected per pickup. Yard waste is picked up weekly per your pickup schedule. Place yard waste at the curb by 7 AM. Yard waste pick up is provided for residential homes only.

HOLIDAYS:

If the holiday falls on or before your pickup day, your collection will be one day later.  The following are the holidays we observe:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day
  • 4th of July
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
